Telfairia Occidentalis is the scientific name for Ugu. It is a tropical vine grown in west Africa as a leafy vegetable. It is indigenous to Southern Nigeria. Common names are fluted gourd, fluted pumpkin, ugu(ugwu) and Ikong-ubong. When cultivated, the fluted pumpkin develop tendrils that usually creep and spread on the surface of the ground. The fluted pumpkin leaves can be used for cooking stews, soups, yam and vegetables, sauces and even for medicinal purposes.

Ugu (Fluted Pumpkin) also know as Telfairia Occidentalise or Ikong ubong plants produce large, dark green edible leaves that can be eaten raw or cooked as a delicious vegetable. It’s considered a ‘superfood’. Ugu is typical grown vertically on a trellis although, it can be allowed to spread flat on a field and harvesting can be done every 2-3 weeks depending on growth conditions and cultivars.
